Michael Butler has proudly served as the Recorder of Deeds for the City of St. Louis since 2019, and is the first African-American elected to this position. From 2020 to 2023, he also made history as the Chairman of the Missouri Democratic Party, being the first African-American to hold that title. A native of St. Louis, Michael represented District 79 in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018, where he championed key issues for his community.​

Before embarking on his political career, Michael built valuable experience in public service, working as a Legislative Aide for State Senator Robin Wright-Jones and later as a Legislative Assistant to State Representative Mary Wynne Still. He also served as an educator in the St. Louis Public School System while running his successful 2012 campaign. In the private sector, Michael honed his management skills as a leader at the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. corporate office in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Michael holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Alabama A&M University, where he was both Student Government President and a Board of Trustees member. He later earned a Master’s in Public Affairs from the University of Missouri-Columbia while working in the legislature. His commitment to public service is further reflected in his leadership roles, including serving as Missouri House Democratic Caucus Chair and Chair of the St. Louis City Democratic Central Committee.

Michael resides in the Gate District Neighborhood with his wife, Erin, and their two daughters, Kimber and Karis.
